How it works

Same high lift, angled horizontal.

High lift with pitch, sometimes called follow-the-roof or incline track, starts like high lift: vertical track extends above the opening for the lift amount, then the radius. The difference is the horizontal track, which is set at an angle to match the roof pitch instead of running level.

That angle changes everything downstream. Cable take-up, drum selection, spring sizing, and hanger geometry all depend on the pitch. We build from two numbers, the roof pitch (rise over run, or degrees) and the high-lift amount, so those matter more than anything else on the quote.

Pitched horizontals are common in pre-engineered metal buildings, ag structures, salt and sand storage, and wash tunnels built under a sloped roof.

Pitched track is for pitched roofs. That is the whole test.

Choose high lift with pitch when

  • The roof or ceiling slopes and level horizontal track would hit it.
  • You need high lift and the building has a pitched roof.
  • Pre-engineered metal buildings, hoop and pole barns, salt sheds, wash tunnels under a sloped roof.

How we typically build pitched track.

Pitch plus lift sets the geometry. Everything else follows from the door size and weight.

Pitched horizontal after high lift

Extended vertical, radius, then horizontal track angled to the roof pitch. The most common build, for buildings with a few feet of headroom before the roof starts to come down.

Best for: Most pitched-roof buildings

Straight incline

The vertical turns almost directly into inclined track with little or no high lift, for low-eave buildings where the roof comes down close to the header.

Best for: Low-eave metal and ag buildings

Breakaway with head plate

Bolted vertical sections with a high-lift head plate, so damaged track can be replaced in sections and the assembly can be installed around obstructions.

Best for: Doors that take hits, and tight installs

2-inch or 3-inch

2-inch for lighter commercial doors, 3-inch for tall or heavy doors and high-cycle openings.

Best for: 3-inch on doors above about 14 feet or heavy panels

What we need to quote it

Measure the pitch. Do not estimate it.

A level held against the underside of the roof structure and a tape give us rise over run. A photo of the truss or purlin with the level in it is ideal.

  1. Door width and height
  2. Roof pitch as rise over a 12-inch run, or in degrees
  3. Headroom at the header: top of the opening to the roof structure
  4. The high lift you want, or the height of what the door must clear
  5. Backroom along the slope, and sideroom on each side
  6. Track size, 2 inch or 3 inch, and door thickness
  7. Number of sections and door weight or panel type if known
  8. Photos from inside showing the opening and the roof structure the track will follow

Common questions

What people ask before they order pitched track.

How do I measure roof pitch?

Hold a level against the underside of the roof structure and measure how much it rises over a 12-inch run. Four inches over twelve is a 4:12 pitch. Degrees work too. If you are unsure, send a photo of the truss or purlin with a level against it.

Does the pitch change the drums and springs?

Yes. A pitched horizontal changes how cable takes up as the door travels, so drums and springs are sized to the pitch and the lift. That is why we ask for a measured pitch rather than an estimate.

The roof is curved, not a straight pitch. Can you still do it?

Sometimes, by building the horizontal in straight segments. Send the roof profile and photos and we will tell you whether pitched track or a different configuration is the right answer.

How does stainless track ship?

Long sections ship LTL freight, curbside, and may need an appointment. Shorter runs and hardware ship UPS. The quote states the shipping method, the lead time, and whether a liftgate is needed.
